Asobi Privacy Policy
Effective date: November 5, 2026
This policy explains what information the Asobi app ("Asobi", "the app", "we", "us") collects, why, and what you can do about it. Asobi is made by the Asobi team, Victoria, Australia. If you have any questions, email us at info@theasobiapp.com.
The short version
- You don't need an account. We never ask for your name, email address or phone number to use the app.
- Your learning progress stays on your phone.
- We collect anonymous usage statistics and crash reports so we can improve the app.
- Purchases are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details.
- We don't show ads, we don't sell your data, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
1. Information that stays on your phone
Most of what you do in Asobi is stored only on your device, in the app's own storage:
- your learning progress, flashcard schedule and review history
- words you save, decks you create, and how you sort or hide decks
- your daily goal, streak and activity calendar
- your settings, such as reminders, voice, furigana and romaji
- your onboarding answers, such as your reasons for learning, your level and your study goal
We cannot see this information. If you delete the app, it is deleted from your phone. Version 1 of Asobi has no cloud backup, so this information also can't be moved to a new phone.
2. Information we collect
Usage statistics (analytics)
We use PostHog to understand how people use Asobi, for example which onboarding steps people finish, how many words are learned in a session, and whether the subscription screen works. We collect:
- App events: for example, "learning session started", "learning session completed", "word saved", "reminder turned on", "paywall shown" and "purchase result". Some events include simple details, such as how many words were in a session or which JLPT level a saved word belongs to.
- Your onboarding answers: your reasons for learning, your Japanese level, your challenges, where you heard about us, your fluency goal, your daily study time and your streak goal.
- Device and app information: your device model, operating system version, app version, language and approximate country. The country comes from your IP address, which PostHog doesn't keep.
- A random identifier: created when the app is first opened. It is not linked to your name, email or Apple ID.
We do not collect what you type into search. We only record how long the search was and how many results it found. We do not record your screen.
Why: to fix problems and make the app better. Under EU and UK law, our legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving our app.
Purchases and subscriptions
Subscriptions are sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles your payment, and we never see your card details or Apple ID. We use RevenueCat to check whether your subscription or free trial is active, and to let you restore purchases. RevenueCat receives:
- a random identifier for your copy of the app
- your purchase history from Apple: which plan you bought, when, whether you're in a free trial, and when it renews or ends
- your device type, operating system version and app version
Why: to give you access to what you paid for. Our legal basis is that this is needed to provide the service you bought (performance of a contract).
Apple Search Ads attribution
If you found Asobi through an Apple Search Ads advertisement, Apple gives the app an attribution token. RevenueCat sends this token to Apple to learn which ad campaign led to the download. This uses Apple's own privacy-preserving system. It does not use your advertising identifier (IDFA), and it does not track you across other apps.
Why: to understand which of our ads work. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in measuring our marketing.
Crash reports
We use Firebase Crashlytics (Google) to receive reports when the app crashes. A crash report includes technical details about the crash, your device model, operating system version, app version and a random installation identifier.
Why: to find and fix bugs. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the app working.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and the app version, which the app adds to the email for you. We use this only to reply to you.
3. Notifications
If you turn on reminders, Asobi schedules them on your phone. We don't use a server to send them, and we don't collect a push notification token. You can turn reminders off at any time in the app's Settings, or in your phone's Settings app.
4. Audio
Japanese pronunciation is played using the voices built into your phone. Asobi does not use your microphone or record audio.
5. What we don't do
- We don't sell or rent your information.
- We don't show ads in the app.
- We don't use your information to track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- We don't ask for your name, email address, contacts, location, photos, camera or microphone.

- ask us to correct or delete it
- object to or limit how we use it
- withdraw consent where we rely on it
- complain to your local data protection authority
To use any of these rights, email info@theasobiapp.com. Because we don't know who you are, we may ask for details that help us find your information, such as the approximate date you installed the app. We will reply within 30 days. We will never treat you differently for using your rights.
California residents: we do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act.
10. Children
Asobi is not directed to children under 13, or under 16 in the EU and UK, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
11. Security
Information sent from the app to our service providers is encrypted in transit. Information on your phone is protected by your device's own security. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and keep collection to a minimum.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. We will change the effective date at the top. If the changes are significant, we will let you know in the app or on our website.
