Asobi Terms of Use
Effective date: November 5, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and the Asobi team, Victoria, Australia ("we", "us") for your use of the Asobi app ("Asobi", "the app"). By downloading or using Asobi, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
Our Privacy Policy explains what information we collect and how we use it.
1. What Asobi is
Asobi is an app for learning Japanese vocabulary. It includes hiragana and katakana lessons, JLPT N5 to N1 word decks, ready-made topic decks, decks you build yourself, a quiz after each lesson, spaced-repetition flashcard reviews, and an offline Japanese to English dictionary.
Asobi is a learning aid. It does not guarantee any result, including passing a JLPT exam or reaching a level of fluency. Any plan, goal or progress estimate shown in the app is a guide only.
2. Who can use Asobi
You must be at least 13 years old, or at least 16 in the EU and UK, to use Asobi. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may only use Asobi with the permission of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms for you.
3. Subscriptions and free trial
Asobi is a subscription app called Asobi Pro, with no free plan. Full access needs an active subscription or free trial.
- Free trial: new subscribers can try Asobi Pro free for 7 days. If you don't cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, your subscription starts and you are charged.
- Plans: Asobi Pro is offered as a monthly or a yearly subscription. The price for your country is shown in the app before you buy.
- Payment: payment is charged to your Apple ID when you confirm the purchase, or when your free trial ends.
- Automatic renewal: your subscription renews automatically at the end of each period, at the same length and current price, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Your Apple ID is charged within 24 hours before the renewal.
- Cancelling: you can manage or cancel your subscription in the app (Profile, then Manage subscription) or in your Apple ID settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Refunds: purchases are handled by Apple, and refunds are given under Apple's policies. You can ask for one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot give refunds directly.
- Price changes: if the price of your subscription changes, Apple will tell you in advance and, where required, ask for your agreement.
- Restoring purchases: if you reinstall Asobi or use a new device with the same Apple ID, tap Restore purchases to get your subscription back.
4. Your licence to use Asobi
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Asobi on any Apple device that you own or control, as allowed by Apple's Usage Rules in the App Store Terms of Service. You may not:
- copy, change, sell, rent or distribute the app, or make it available to others
- reverse engineer, decompile or try to get the source code of the app, except where the law allows it
- remove any copyright, licence or other notices
- use the app for anything illegal, or in a way that could harm the app or other people
- get around the subscription or any other access control
5. Content and ownership
The Asobi app, its design, logo, artwork, text and code belong to us or our licensors and are protected by copyright and other laws.
Some of the content in Asobi comes from open projects, used under their licences:
- Dictionary data from JMdict, by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group (EDRDG), under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence.
- Example sentences from Tatoeba (tatoeba.org), under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 France licence.
- JLPT word lists by Jonathan Waller (tanos.co.uk), under the Creative Commons Attribution licence.
- Colour icons from Fluent UI System Icons by Microsoft, under the MIT licence.
The full list is in the app under Profile, then Credits. Your rights to that content are set by those licences, not by these terms.
6. Accuracy
We work hard to make sure Asobi is accurate, but dictionary entries, readings, translations, example sentences, JLPT levels and audio may contain mistakes. Pronunciation uses your device's built-in voices, which may not always sound natural. Please don't rely on Asobi alone for anything important, such as medical, legal or safety matters.
7. Your data on your device
Your progress, saved words and decks are stored on your device. Version 1 of Asobi has no account or cloud backup. If you delete the app or lose your device, this data cannot be recovered. You are responsible for your device and its backups.
8. Changes to the app
We may update, change or stop parts of Asobi at any time, for example to add features, fix problems or meet legal requirements. Some updates may be needed to keep using the app.
9. Ending these terms
You can stop using Asobi at any time by deleting it. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription; see section 3 to cancel. We may end or suspend your licence if you break these terms. Sections 5, 6, 10, 11 and 13 continue to apply after these terms end.
10. Disclaimer
To the extent the law allows, Asobi is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We don't promise that the app will always be available, error-free or free of harmful components.
11. Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, progress, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of Asobi. Our total liability for any claim about Asobi is limited to the amount you paid for Asobi in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by law, or our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.
12. Apple
These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for Asobi or its content. In addition:
- Licence: your licence to use Asobi is limited to using it on Apple-branded products you own or control, as allowed by the Usage Rules in the App Store Terms of Service. The app may also be used by other accounts linked to you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
- Maintenance and support: we alone are responsible for providing maintenance and support for Asobi. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for the app.
- Warranty: we alone are responsible for any product warranties that cannot be excluded by law. If Asobi fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any, of the app to you. To the maximum extent allowed by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Asobi. Any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses caused by any failure to conform to any warranty are our responsibility, to the extent they cannot be excluded.
- Product claims: we, not Apple, are responsible for handling any claims by you or anyone else about Asobi or your use of it. This includes product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet any legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.

- Legal compliance: you confirm that you are not located in a country that is subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or that has been designated by the U.S. Government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Third-party terms: you must follow any applicable third-party terms when using Asobi.
- Third-party beneficiary: Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Once you accept these terms, Apple has the right, and will be deemed to have accepted the right, to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia, without regard to its conflict of law rules. Any dispute will be handled by the courts of Victoria, Australia, unless the consumer protection laws of the country where you live give you the right to bring a claim there.
14. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will change the effective date at the top, and if the changes are significant, we will let you know in the app or on our website. If you keep using Asobi after changes take effect, you accept the new terms.
